Hello again, readers! Have you ever witnessed sheer joy come across a person's face over the smallest of gestures? I was lucky enough to see this happen today when my good friend Charles Swan was given a magnet from the show he was recently in at TUTS: The Best Little W... in Texas.  He wasn't even aware the magnet existed until he saw mine. That's when fate intervened and the manager of the Encore store, Suzanne Tidwell, was able to provide Charles with the small token that holds such great memories for him.

This really got me to think about all the items we purchase when attending a show and how some people will religiously buy the same kind of item not only as a souvenir, but as a memory of an extra-special experience they might have had. You may recall I wrote a blog a few years ago about my attachment to my super special Victor/Victoria mug and how devastated I was when it broke. Some people may choose to purchase a t-shirt while others go for the magnets. I have some friends whose refrigerator is covered in magnets from the various shows they've seen all over the nation; each one holding a special memory and story. My favorite mementos have always been a Playbill, but I recently starting collecting magnets as well.

I have also found it quite endearing that when purchasing a show magnet, the customer will always buy one for a friend, too. Even if the friend wasn’t able to come to the show, they still get to share in the experience.  That definitely puts a smile on my face!

What kind of souvenirs do you buy when attending a play or musical? Do you buy something for a friend, too? How many t-shirts, posters or magnets do you have in your collection?

Until next time,
Thea

Re: The Magnetism of Broadway Souvenirs

I always keep the Playbill and ticket. I HATE printing out tickets and even if it's a cheaper option to print the ticket, I will opt to have a real ticket mailed/will-called. It just doesn't feel real to me if I print the ticket out at home. If it's a show I really liked... I mean REALLY REALLY REALLY moved me so much that I can't stop thinking about it months after, I might buy a T-shirt the next time I see the show. It's just... they're so expensive!

Now when I go to a baseball game... I spare no expense to get my scorecard and souvenir baseball (at new parks) and I get really mad if either of these items is unavailable. Hahaha.

Don't recall buying a magnet (yet), but I've started picking up my own collection of souvenirs. Sitting on my desk right now is my La Cage mug. Just looking at it perks up my spirits. I also have a growing variety of t-shirts from shows, and most recently, I picked up an ornament. I like things that stand out in the collection. Unique things remind me of a unique experience.
